Learn how to view relative microphone levels, create a device-specific calibrated estimate, and understand the limitations of browser measurements.

Allow Microphone Access
When you click "Start Measurement", your browser will ask for microphone permission. Click "Allow" so the tool can measure sound levels.

Position Your Device
For more consistent relative readings:
- •Hold your device at arm's length from the sound source
- •Point the microphone toward the sound
- •Don't cover the microphone with your hand
- •Keep the device steady during measurement

Start Measuring
Click "Start Measurement". You'll see:
- •Live input reading - Relative dBFS before calibration, or an estimated dB SPL value afterward
- •Scale label - The display always identifies whether the value is dBFS or estimated dB SPL
- •Waveform - Visual representation of sound waves
- •Statistics - Max, Min, and Average values
- •History chart - Sound level trends over time

Calibrate (Optional)
To create a device-specific estimate:
- 1.Use a reference meter to measure a known sound
- 2.Click "Calibrate" while measuring the same sound
- 3.Enter the reference value from your physical meter
- 4.Click "Calibrate" to save the offset

Export Data
Click "Export" to download your measurement history as a CSV file. Useful for tracking noise levels over time or sharing data.
Tips for More Consistent Readings
- ✓Different devices have different microphone sensitivities
- ✓Calibration applies one device-specific offset; it does not certify the microphone
- ✓Avoid wind noise when measuring outdoors
